I started playing mid-voice in the 1968 Racine
Jr. Scouts
(mellophones were barely invented then, so I
played the next
best thing... French Horn Bugle). By 1971 I was
playing mello
with the Chrome Domes (the first year that they
marched them)
I marched mello for 8 years in the Boys of 76
Senior corps,
and have played mello with the Kilties Sr. since
1993. I am
the only mellophone that I know of that has played
mellophone
bugle with a country and western band (really
:-))."

"I'm originally a trumpet player, and played
soprano in the Bridgemen (1987)...I should get an award for that accomplishment
alone! In 1990, I joined the Crossmen and played 2nd mello in a great
mellophone line. Just listen to us play the melody in Barogue Samba
after the samba kicks in...TIGHT!!! I switched to soprano in 1991
(mostly to prepare myself for being a music major in the fall on trumpet).
I NEVER should have played sop...I hated it. I then realized that
the mellophone is the instrument of the Gods, the one true stud instrument
in drum corps, and made a triumphant return in 1992. I got to age-out
in a great mellophone line which firmly cemented me as a mello player 4
life! I was also a marching tech for the mellophones in the 1996
Jersey Surf and the 1997 Crossmen."
